SUPP might consider accepting Sng — Dr Chan

MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan hinted that the party would consider admitting partyless Pelagus assemblyman Larry Sng if he is accepted by the people.

Dr Chan said any decision on the matter depended on the support of the people and could not be done by him or the party leadership alone.

“If I accept him, it does not mean that the people would accept (him). I want people who are accepted by the people on the ground,” Dr Chan disclosed this to reporters after the presentation of education aid from Miri Chinese Charitable Trust Board to 200 students yesterday.

Dr Chan was asked for comment on the possibility of Sng (who was sacked in April 2008 from Parti Rakyat Sarawak — PRS) joining SUPP as he is still partyless.

He said: “We are not so exclusive where nobody else can get in. This is why I keep on saying that the party wants to open our door to anybody who wants to join us to promote or help us to serve the people.”

MIRI: The Chinese are welcomed to submit the names of their preferred candidates for the next state election on one condition.

The candidates must fully support the Barisan Nasional (BN), said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who is also the state BN chairman.

“It doesn’t matter if those you propose are partyless. For the sake of the future of the Chinese, you must choose good leaders,” he said when he officiated at Hunyuan Hexiang Zhuang Qigong’s tenth anniversary celebration at Miri Indoor Stadium last Friday night.

The state BN needs effective Chinese representatives who can work closely with other races on common aims and aspirations, he said.

Chinese input is vital to accelerate development as the community has always been part of the progress and prosperity of the state and country.

“I hope Sarawak would continue to prosper regardless of the composition of its population,” he said, urging the people to work closely with the government on mainstream development.

Giving Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) as an example, he said the party was grooming young people to become future leaders.

In PBB, he said, 20 to 30 per cent of its leaders would be changed to allow the young to serve.

“Young people with new ideas would make mistakes. But let them learn from the mistakes because it is part of the process of getting to be a good leader,” he said.

At the same time, there is a need to translate the ideals of ‘Government of the People, Government by the People and Government for the People’ into concrete actions.

In this, a political party which is not in touch with the people would not be able to provide and deliver good public service.

On business, he wanted the Chinese to stop their traditional practises which could cause them to be left behind in the context of the current competitive global business environment.

“There is no more advantage of hard work. If you still practise old business ways, you would be defeated by others, even by foreigners who invest in business here,” he said.

Later at the same function, Taib announced the granting of RM50,000 in minor rural project (MRP) funds to the association.

He also witnessed the presentation of a donation cheques for RM10,000 each to Riam Road Middle School and Pei Min Middle School.
