MIRI: The coming state election may see Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan face off with a candidate from Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Piasau, a seat which he has held for six terms.

This is because as reported in a Chinese daily, lawyer Ling Sie Kiong, 28, will take on the veteran politician in the seat which saw Dr Chan beating many opposition candidates in previous elections.

“It’s up to Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to decide with my party, DAP, if they want me to stand there. I will go all out and accept the challenge,” Ling said to The Borneo Post when met at his office yesterday afternoon, adding as a life member of DAP he would abide by the party’s decision whether to put him in Piasau or other areas.

SUPP might consider accepting Sng — Dr Chan

Posted on November 7, 2010, Sunday

MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan hinted that the party would consider admitting partyless Pelagus assemblyman Larry Sng if he is accepted by the people.

Dr Chan said any decision on the matter depended on the support of the people and could not be done by him or the party leadership alone.

“If I accept him, it does not mean that the people would accept (him). I want people who are accepted by the people on the ground,” Dr Chan disclosed this to reporters after the presentation of education aid from Miri Chinese Charitable Trust Board to 200 students yesterday.

Dr Chan was asked for comment on the possibility of Sng (who was sacked in April 2008 from Parti Rakyat Sarawak — PRS) joining SUPP as he is still partyless.

He said: “We are not so exclusive where nobody else can get in. This is why I keep on saying that the party wants to open our door to anybody who wants to join us to promote or help us to serve the people.”

ANALYSIS The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will be fielding candidates for its 19 seats again if nothing is changed at the last minute.

Almost every candidate is in place except for Padungan and Meradong.

Padungan, a predominantly Chinese area, is now in the Opposition orbit when SUPP's Lily Yong lost to PKR's Dominque Ng in the last state election in 2006.

Not real, only to scare BN leaders

Sarawak Mirror
Friday, August 20, 2010

KUCHING: A political analyst said it would be a grave mistake for Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) to pull out from the Barisan Nasional (BN).

A senior lecturer with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Professor Dr Jeniri Amir said if indeed SUPP pull out of the coalition then it would be a great lost not only to the party but also the Chinese community in Sarawak.

He however believed that it was just SUPP trick to frighten the government and BN leaders.

“It’s not going to be real, I believe, it was just an old trick to scare the BN leaders and the government to achieve their own agenda,” said Dr Jeniri to The Star yesterday.
