MIRI: The coming state election may see Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan face off with a candidate from Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Piasau, a seat which he has held for six terms.

This is because as reported in a Chinese daily, lawyer Ling Sie Kiong, 28, will take on the veteran politician in the seat which saw Dr Chan beating many opposition candidates in previous elections.

“It’s up to Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to decide with my party, DAP, if they want me to stand there. I will go all out and accept the challenge,” Ling said to The Borneo Post when met at his office yesterday afternoon, adding as a life member of DAP he would abide by the party’s decision whether to put him in Piasau or other areas.

On the other hand, he said he would accept the challenge to contest against the veteran SUPP leader as politics had always been in his heart and taking the decision to join the opposition party instead of the ruling party was a sacrifice he had to make.

“My goal is to help the people and I believe with the political struggle I can change the policies,” he disclosed further.

Ling did his chambering at Karpal Singh’s law firm in Kuala Lumpur before coming back to Miri in June last year and becoming a DAP life member.

Last Friday, he was given a chance to give a talk during a DAP dinner in Sibu.

Ling spent his childhood with the Ibans and Lun Bawangs in Naga Mendamit, Limbang.

He studied in Chung Hua Limbang before following his parents to Miri and continued his studies in SRK North where he was chosen as a model student.

He attended St Joseph’s Secondary School and Curtin University in Miri before pursuing his A level in Kuala Lumpur and further studies in England. Meanwhile, PKR Miri chief Dr Teo Yu Kheng is said to be keen in the same seat as reported in the media last week. - Borneo Post
