| Voon Lee Shan - A caring Wakil Rakyat |
KUCHING: Batu Lintang assemblyman Voon Lee Shan had surprised many Malays and Dayaks assemblymen on last Friday during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.
Not even one of the indigenous assemblymen was heard making any sound when Lee Shan was reading his text speech urging the state government to recognise the native status of the Chinese, Eurasians, Indians, et cetera which was conferred to them by the Rajah Brooke.
If a pin was dropped on the floor, all could have heard it!
Even the regal DUN speaker Dato Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar seemed not to believe what he had heard.
Lee Shan said the Rajah Brooke had made a decree that all of his natural born subjects, regardless of their races, are natives.
He further argued during the sitting that - by which not even one indigenous assemblyman objected to his claim - he failed to find any court ruling that nullified the definition of 'native' as decreed by the Rajah Brooke.
Therefore, he said, since all the present denizens of Sarawak are the descendants of the natural born 'natives' of the state, all non-indigenous people should be regarded as natives and should receive equal rights likes the Dayaks and Malays!
To the surprise of many who watched the sitting, not even one indigenous assemblyman interupted Lee Shan when he was touching on this issue.
The 'so-called' Dayak leaders Dato Sri James Jemut Masing and Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom were inside the room.
The right hand man of Dato Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, Mohd Naroden Majais, was seen enjoying himself sitting comfortably on his chair as if he was dreaming.
And the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Sarawak assemblywomen were reacting as if they were given drugs because even them could not believe that Lee Shan was actually saying it.
The most interesting point raised by Lee Shan is not only the decree that made all as natives but on his finding that the decree is valid - at least in his opinion.
With this 'fact', the Malays and Dayaks surely not happy and might decide to close ranks as the 'native' status is sacred to them and as it is now, they are not willing to share it with any non-indigenous people.
It would be interesting to see how the back bone of the state government, i.e. Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) would react to this!!!
Apparently both the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Sarawak Progressive and Democratic Party (SPDP) are now looking at PBB for its hints on what to do next.
Are we going to see the rise of Bumiputera-ism instead of Dayak-ism?
Is this happen, should Lee Shan to be blamed for stirring up the '-ism' by touching on something which should not be touched on the first place???
